This painting shows a half-peeled grapefruit with a piece of peel beside it. The grapefruit is lit up from behind, and light is glowing through it. Thin purple veins are visible inside the brilliant vivid red grapefruit flesh. The shadow areas on the light-colored fuzz are lit with cool light and appear bluish-green; they contrast sharply with the bright oranges and reds. Light is shining through some of the grapefruit peel, causing it to glow a bright orange. The deep brown and black surroundings have a luminous, glowing appearance.
