Andrew Sleeping

Not For Sale

Medium: oil on canvas

Dimensions: 80 x 110 cm.

This painting shows my brother Andrew taking his nap on a couch in our family's old apartment in Gaziantep, Turkey. I began this painting at age 14 and completed it at age 15. At the time, I had an intense interest in French academic painting of the 1800s. My painting process in this portrait was influenced by William-Adolpe Bouguereau. Initially, I painted this from life in our living room, bribing Andrew with candy to pose for me, but we moved to Germany before I could finish, so I had to use some photographic reference, which I dislike.
