This painting depicts the Virgin Mary as she is described in Revelation 12 in the Bible: "A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars... She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod." The crushed snake under Mary’s feet references Genesis 3:15. Mary is new Eve who gives birth to Jesus, the new Adam, and they crush the head of Satan the serpent.
