This miniature still life shows light passing through some mandarin segments and a piece of mandarin peel. The lit-up mandarin slices glow a brilliant, deep orange as the bright warm light streams through them. The white parts on the mandarin slices are bluish in shadow, and contrast sharply with the glowing orange light that surrounds them. Some reflected orange light is on the tabletop and in the shadows. This picture was painted at age 15.
